“Wow!” I said, feeling my tiredness fade away. “Thank you!”

We discussed salary and some of my new responsibilities. Later, Mr. Caruso told me to head home. We’d pick up the discussion the next day.

But as I walked out of his office, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we could have handled things differently.

“Mr. Caruso,” I said, turning back, “do you think we should have called the police right away? I mean, they did dine and dash.”

He smiled, leaning back in his chair. “Justice was served, Erica. Look at the support we received. That’s what counts. Some people who dine and dash get away with it, and the restaurant never recovers the money. Instead, you helped us gain more.”
