19-year-old crushed by forklift chooses to amputate bottom half of his body

In 2019, 19-year-old Loren Schauers from Montana survived a horrific accident after a forklift he was driving fell 50 feet and crushed the lower half of his body. Conscious through it all, Loren made the brave choice to undergo a life-saving hemicorporectomy—amputating everything below his waist.

Supported by his girlfriend Sabia, now his wife, Loren defied the odds and left the hospital in just three months. Despite ongoing health challenges, he shares his journey on YouTube, inspiring over 600,000 followers.

The couple faces invasive questions, especially about their intimacy, which Sabia calls “deeply disrespectful.” Loren is more open about other topics, explaining his use of a colostomy and kidney drains.

Though some friends drifted away, Loren remains positive: “I got Sabia, that’s all I need.”

Now five years on, Loren reflects with gratitude, saying, “You can’t focus on what you’ve lost—live fully with what you have.”
