Oscar-Winning Actor from ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ Passes Away at 87

Louis Gossett Jr., famed for roles in An Officer and a Gentleman and Roots, died at 87. The first Black to win a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, he changed Hollywood.

He worked on over 200 projects, 12 unreleased. Sadly, he won’t see them.

On March 28, 2024, he passed in Santa Monica. NPR reported it. TMZ’s death cert said COPD, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation caused his death. After years with COPD, his body was to be cremated.

Before Hollywood, he started on stage, performing with Monroe and Poitier, building his career.

In Hollywood, he got respect but faced racism. Once, police held him for hours en route to his hotel. “It should’ve taken 20 minutes,” he said, “but it was 4.5 hours as they doubted I belonged.”
