Going to the zoo is for fun.

But on a spring day in 2009, the polar bear area in Berlin Zoo was filled with panicked howls, making it a life-or-death scene.

When a terrifying and very rare event happened right in front of visitors, they got the shock of their lives. Even after so many years, people are still curious about it. After all, it’s not common for visitors to be in a polar bear’s home with cameras catching every exciting moment.

It began with the daily polar bear feeding at the zoo, a big draw for tourists in the German capital. These bears are so big and strong that zookeepers stay away during feeding, carefully tossing food into the enclosure from outside.

Suddenly, a 32-year-old woman climbed the three-foot wall around the bears and jumped into the cold water. She sat on a rock ledge and swam toward the bears without a second thought. Most of the bears were busy with the food the keepers were throwing, but one saw the woman and charged.
