After My First Love Passed Away, I Raised Her 9 Daughters

I welcomed the nine girls my childhood sweetheart left behind, thinking I was securing their tomorrow. I never imagined they were the ones carrying a secret from the past that would completely shift my reality.

I am Brooks, and this is my journey.

Ever since our teenage years, I cared for just one person, Cora. Yet, life never allowed us to become a couple.

Decades passed, and she passed away at thirty-five, leaving nine girls, all half-siblings, without anyone to raise them. Cora welcomed them over a span of time with four separate guys. Every single one of those dads could not step up to care for them. A couple of them had passed on, another was locked up, and the last one moved overseas.

Honestly, though, not a single one of those guys truly desired to be a dad.

Once I found out about Cora and her family’s tragedy, thanks to an old school buddy who kept me updated on her, I just could not turn my back. I had previously enjoyed the chance to interact with Cora’s kids.

I quickly figured out the place the girls were staying and showed up there without any warning.

I will always remember the expression of the child services agent when I informed her that I absolutely refused to walk out unless I took every single one of those nine kids with me.

Making the arrangement legal required a while.

However, the official refused to let the kids get trapped in foster care or split apart, so she pulled some strings secretly to speed up the paperwork. During that wait, because nobody else offered to take them, every single girl stayed at my house for a test run.

Folks labeled me crazy. There were times I actually thought they made a fair point.

My mom and dad strongly opposed my choice, to the point where they completely cut off contact with me!

Neighbors used to gossip, intentionally raising their voices so I could catch it, saying, “Why is a single guy taking in nine kids who share zero resemblance to him?”

Yet I ignored all of that. My mind was entirely focused on the kids. I felt a profound need to rescue them. I did it for Cora, and because of the affection I still held in my heart for her.

I had never tied the knot or raised any kids myself, making the public’s worries pretty reasonable. Truthfully, managing life proved quite difficult as a fresh dad to nine.

Initially, the kids felt scared and lacked faith in me. Even the case agents felt concerned that I might cause them harm.

However, day after day, I showed everyone that I was worthy of being their dad.

I traded away all my valuable possessions to get a financial boost. Fortunately, I already possessed a solid home and a bit of money put away.

I additionally took on back-to-back work hours until my fingers were raw. During the evenings, I dedicated hours to watching online videos to figure out how to style their hair.

Gradually, our bond strengthened, and the court officially granted me the right to be their parent.

With the passing years, I started losing sight of the fact that they were not my blood relatives. I developed a love for them that surpassed everything else on earth, and I gave it my absolute all to bring them joy.

Time flew by, yet our connection stayed tight, long after they became adults.

When the twentieth year since Cora passed rolled around, my sweet girls arrived at my doorstep completely unexpectedly.

Naturally, I felt incredibly thrilled! The reality was, we rarely gathered as frequently as I wished. We usually managed to reunite just a couple of times annually, during the holidays or springtime.

To honor having everyone together for such a meaningful event, I cooked a nice meal.

We took a while to share memories about their mom. Yet throughout the night, I observed my girls wearing unusual looks on their faces. They were also incredibly quiet.

I sensed an issue lingering in the air, but I refused to ruin such an uncommon family gathering.

Out of nowhere, my eldest girl, Tess, spoke up, “Dad, we have a major secret to admit. We have literally kept this concealed from you since we were kids. However, you finally need to hear the facts.”

“Did something go wrong? What is happening?” I questioned.

Tess stared at me with intense focus before she replied.

“Mom always held onto her feelings for you.”

Her statement made my gut drop instantly. The entire space fell completely silent.

“Excuse me?” I mumbled, struggling to process the sentence she just delivered.

Another one of my girls, Faye, dug into her purse and retrieved a stack of worn-out paper mail, bound with a string.

“We discovered these back at our childhood home a long time ago. They are personal notes. Mom penned them specifically regarding you.”

I simply gazed at the pile.

“She kept them unsent,” Tess clarified. “We were confused about the reason initially… yet as we matured, we opened them up. We figured those words would allow us to understand her on a deeper level.”

I took a heavy gulp. “And what exactly did she write?”

Tess answered right away. “That you were her one true soulmate.”

For decades I assumed she had completely let me go. All of my lingering doubts.

And now it all came down to this moment.

“We left a single one unopened,” my eldest mentioned. She moved closer and passed me an isolated piece of mail.

It remained glued shut. Completely pristine.

“This specific note carried a different vibe,” Tess pointed out. “As if it was never intended for our eyes. Plus, the outside has your name on it.”

I accepted it with a gentle motion.

“Dad… you need to open this,” she softly suggested.

The sheer importance of that paper felt massive against my palms.

“You girls held onto this for decades?”

“We struggled with how to hand it over. We had no clue what her final message contained, and we felt anxious that it could bring awful changes for our family. Perhaps she requested that you keep your distance and build an independent path,” Gwen confessed.

“And after that… the days simply slipped away,” I completed her thought.

That explanation felt completely logical to me.

I glanced back at the paper in my hands.

My title was penned in her familiar script.

“Open it up,” Tess urged with a soft voice.

With shaky fingers, I tore the seal and began to review the text.

“Brooks,

Should you ever view these words, it implies I finally gathered the bravery I lacked… or my clock has simply stopped ticking.

I am unsure how to justify my absence. I made countless attempts, yet every single version felt like a weak apology. You were definitely much more than just a distant memory.

You were the future I always envisioned for myself.”

I stopped for a brief moment, trying to regain my composure.

After that, I pushed forward.

“I desired to reveal the honest facts to you so frequently.

I drafted messages. I held onto them.

I promised myself I would mail them over once the moment felt perfect.

Yet I delayed it excessively. There is a specific reality you have the right to be aware of.”

My chest began to beat wildly.

I went on with the letter,

“Following our short evening together back in our teenage years… I ended up expecting a baby. Once I confessed to my mother and father, they offered me very few options. After I declined to end the pregnancy, they yanked me right out of our classes.

They moved me far away. They severed every tie that linked me to my old world, which meant losing you.”

My fingers shook while I scanned the next lines, water quickly filling my vision.

“I was robbed of the chance to bid farewell. Plus I never got the opportunity to announce your new role as a dad.

Our little girl was raised tough. Caring. She carries your gentle spirit.”

The text smeared together for an instant until I made myself concentrate once more. I paused my reading and raised my gaze toward Tess. She, similar to the rest of the girls, was staring at me with deep expectation. I dropped my view back to the paper.

“I convinced my own mind that I was keeping you safe. That I was granting you the opportunity for a better path.

However, the honest reality is… I felt terrified. Had I been given a clear opening, I would have confessed it all to you. I would have explained that my affection for you never faded. You truly earned the right to hear that. Should you be reviewing this paper today… I apologize that it required such a massive wait.

And I pray that, in some way, you managed to cross paths with my kids.

—Cora.”

A single drop fell from my eye before I managed to wipe it. Nine pairs of eyes stared right back at me, holding their breath.

I dropped the paper down gently. After that, I stood up and stepped closer to Tess.

“You were aware?” I questioned softly.

She moved her head up and down. “We pieced it together upon reviewing those old notes. We simply lacked the right words to break the news to you.”

I stared right at her. And all at once… the past became crystal clear. The manner in which she walked and occasionally observed me, like a silent bond existed connecting the two of us.

Next, I wrapped her securely in a tight embrace.

“I have zero need for a genetic swab.”

Tess released a tearful chuckle. “I understand.”

I stepped away slightly and signaled for the remaining girls to gather around, and we all locked into a massive group embrace!

“Every single one of you is my kid,” I stated. “This news alters absolutely nothing.”

And truly, it left everything exactly the same.

I creased my teenage sweetheart’s note meticulously and placed it upon the dining surface.

Tess dried her tears. “I assumed you would feel much more stunned.”

“I certainly am,” I confessed. “I simply… do not feel confused.”

That response appeared to catch them off guard.

A younger girl, Mae, questioned, “You are not angry?”

“Not at all,” I replied truthfully. “I believe I wasted plenty of time being bitter regarding situations I could not grasp.”

We had all gathered around the eating area by that point as I clarified, “Ultimately, not a single vital detail shifted,” causing them to look at one another.

“Can you clarify that?” Tess requested.

“I parented nine wonderful girls. I was present daily and selected this path because I truly desired to, rather than being forced into it. Discovering you are my flesh and blood… that introduces nothing drastically fresh. It merely clarifies the reason this setup continually felt so natural.”

Tess’s expression relaxed warmly. “Dad, you are absolutely incredible.”

For the initial moment all evening, the heavy anxiety in the house faded away.

Ruth chimed in with a soft tone. “We felt terrified. We strongly desired for our dynamic to stay exactly the same.”

The dynamic stayed steady. In fact, an missing puzzle piece had eventually clicked into its proper spot.

Once the meal concluded, we transitioned over to the lounge area.

However, the atmosphere seemed altered by then. Much brighter. As if a secret that had been silently hovering around us had ultimately been voiced openly. Tess took a seat right next to me. She avoided the opposite sofa. She skipped the distant armchair. Right next to me.

She rested her cheek gently on my upper arm, exactly how she always did back when she was just a little kid.

For a brief moment, the gesture startled me. After that, I allowed my body to melt into the embrace.

“Do you ever think about how life might have unfolded had she confessed to you in the past?” she inquired.

I pondered the question. “Honestly, I did a lot.”

“What about currently?”

“Nowadays I believe… we landed exactly where destiny intended.”

Tess stayed silent for a brief span. Next, she grinned. “I really appreciate that response.”

A while later, Nell carried in some sweet treats, an item the girls purchased during their drive over.

“You surely did not assume we would arrive without bringing a gift, right?” she joked.

“I honestly would not be shocked if you did,” I teased back.

We sliced the cake as a group, handing dishes across the table, loudly chatting over one another once more. Exactly like our old routine. Just the way we always behaved whenever life seemed perfectly normal.

During the chatter, a voice piped up, “Alright, how do we move forward from this point?”

I gazed across the room at every single one of my nine girls. Grown ladies at this point.

Tough. Self-reliant. Unique in their personal manners.

Yet always… my children.

“We simply continue living,” I replied.

That settled it. Zero dramatic monologues.

Zero theatrical pauses. Merely the honest reality.

Deep into the evening, once the majority of the girls got comfortable or began driving home, I ended up seated at the dining spot once again. Cora’s note remained resting precisely where I dropped it earlier. I lifted the paper once more. I brushed my thumb across her ink strokes.

For decades, I assumed our romance concluded lacking any real resolution.

Yet this discovery helped me understand that we simply traveled alternative routes.

A route that circled directly back to this exact spot.

I grinned quietly in the empty room. “You constantly managed life on your personal terms.”

“Chatting with Mom once more?” a familiar tone echoed from my back.

I spun around. Tess remained in the hall, resting her weight on the doorframe.

“Pretty much exactly that,” I admitted.

She strolled closer and grabbed a chair facing me. “You must know, she frequently brought up your name.”

“Is that true?”

“Absolutely. She would mention that you remained the sole individual who genuinely made her feel entirely seen.”

I lifted a brow. “That definitely seems like something she would state.”

“She was completely accurate, by the way,” Tess pointed out.

“Regarding what exactly?”

She offered a warm grin. “Regarding the kind of man you are.”

I offered no verbal reply since it felt totally unnecessary.

Because for the initial moment in many years… I truly bought into it.

The next sunrise, I got out of bed and dedicated a few moments to quiet reflection. Afterward, I grabbed my device and typed out a text to the family thread we maintained for a long while. “Morning meal this coming weekend. Every single one of you. Zero exceptions.”

The responses flooded back practically right away: chuckling, groaning, accepting — our standard dynamic.

I beamed. And for the very first time in ages, I genuinely sensed that my life was completely whole.
