According to reports, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 rocked western China near Nepal on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 53 people dead and 62 others injured.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that this 7.1-magnitude quake was centered in the Tibet region, about 10 kilometers (or 6 miles) deep. However, an Associated Press report noted that China recorded the earthquake at 6.8 magnitude.
The epicenter was situated right where the India and Eurasia tectonic plates collide, leading to the uplift of the Himalayan mountains. China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported that the average altitude around the epicenter is 4,200 meters (that’s 13,800 feet).
