Meaning behind the ‘WC’ sign outside bathrooms

Ever seen “WC” posted outside a public bathroom and wondered what it means?

You’re not alone. People worldwide are trying to figure out this mystery. “WC” marks a room with a toilet and a sink.

We’ll explain “WC,” but can’t guarantee it’ll make more sense than “restroom,” “bathroom,” or “loo”…

In 2020, Shelby and Dylan shared a TikTok video showing a big difference in how some Americans and Canadians refer to the toilet room.

“What on earth is a washroom?” Dylan asks, passing a sign that says “washroom.”

“And what are they washing in there? Oh, it’s a restroom. The only thing I wash in there is my hands,” he tells his wife.

Off-camera, Shelby asks, “Do you rest in a restroom?”

“That’s a good point. Neither makes much sense,” Dylan adds.

Online users chimed in with their preferred terms in the comments.

“ It’s called a bathroom, restroom, washroom and toilet,” one user said.

Another said when visiting Disneyland, they “asked for the washroom” and were “sent to the laundromat!”
