Lots of bathroom sinks have a small, easy-to-miss hole near the faucet, about a third of the way up the basin. It might look unimportant, but it’s got a big job. Here’s what it does and how to keep it in good shape.
Function of the Hole
This little hole is key to the sink design. It links to the drain below and stops water from overflowing.
How It Works: Prevents Overflow: If you forget to turn off the faucet or get distracted — like when you’re on the phone — the water in the sink can rise. Once it hits the hole, the extra water goes down through it into the drain, stopping the floor from getting flooded.

Problems with the Hole
Even with its perks, the hole can cause issues: Bacteria and Mold: Its spot makes it likely to trap water, soap bits, and other stuff. That can grow bacteria and mold, making a bad smell.
Smell Fix: A stinky hole usually means there’s gunk and bacteria. Luckily, there are easy ways to clean it.
Cleaning the Hole
To keep your sink and bathroom smelling nice, do this: Make a Cleaner: Mix equal parts baking soda and vinegar. The reaction will knock dirt and gunk out of the pipes.
Use the Mix: Pour it into the hole and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to clean things up.
