Baby Born Clutching Mom’s Failed IUD: Hilarious Viral Photo Sparks Joy and Questions
A Vietnamese newborn is making headlines worldwide—for literally holding onto his mother’s contraceptive device. The hilarious photo of the baby boy clutching an intra-uterine device (IUD) has gone viral, blending humor with a medical curiosity.
The Unplanned Arrival with a Twist
The 34-year-old mother, who wishes to remain anonymous, had the copper IUD inserted two years ago. But when she became pregnant despite the device, doctors at Hai Phong International Hospital suspected it had shifted position, rendering it ineffective. During delivery, to everyone’s surprise, the healthy 3.2kg baby emerged gripping the coil in his tiny hand.
Obstetrician Tran Viet Phuong shared the photo, saying, “I took the picture because it was so unusual. I never expected it to go viral.” The image quickly sparked laughter online, with comments like, “This baby was determined to arrive!” and “Proof he’s a fighter from day one!”
Fact vs. Fiction: Previous Cases and IUD Basics
This isn’t the first time a baby has “staged” such a moment. In 2017, a photo of a baby holding a Mirena IUD went viral, but the parents later admitted it was posed—the device was removed during a C-section. Unlike that case, this Vietnamese baby’s photo appears genuine, with doctors confirming the IUD was in the uterus during pregnancy.
IUDs come in two types: copper (a physical barrier) and hormonal (releasing progesterone). Both are highly effective when properly placed, but migration can reduce efficacy. Dr. Phuong noted, “While rare, this shows why regular IUD check-ups are important.”
A Light-Hearted Reminder
While the internet jokes about the baby “defeating birth control,” the case highlights the importance of contraceptive monitoring. so,the baby is healthy, and the mother—now with three children—has become part of a quirky medical legacy. As one user summed it up: “Nature finds a way… and sometimes, it’s hilarious.”
