Your nails can show a lot about your health. Changes in their shape, color, or texture might suggest underlying medical problems. Dr. Sara Norris says nail health reflects nutrition and digestion, so it’s important for overall health monitoring. Here are some health issues your nails can hint at:
Beau’s Lines
These are deep grooves across the nails. They often mean a temporary stop in nail growth due to a serious illness or infection. Dr. Bhavini Shah says they can show up after things like COVID – 19, chemotherapy, or high fevers. In bad cases, the nail may stop growing completely. Usually, they’re not too worrying, but if they keep coming back, see your GP.
Clubbing
When nails curve down and fingertips swell, it could signal heart disease. Clubbing happens slowly, and it’s hard to notice until it’s quite advanced. There may be other symptoms like swollen ankles, extreme tiredness, and chest pain. If you notice a big change in nail shape and other health problems, consult a doctor.
Spoon – Shaped Nails
Nails that curve inward are often linked to iron – deficiency anemia. This can happen after pregnancy, or because of poor nutrition, digestive problems, or celiac disease. Symptoms include pale skin, headaches, and shortness of breath. Dr. Shah says if you have spoon – shaped nails, make an appointment with your GP for a blood test. Treatment usually involves iron supplements and diet changes.
