67 – year – old amputee Anthony Mitchell and his son Justin, who had cerebral palsy, died in the LA wildfires. Anthony, in a wheelchair, stayed to protect Justin. His daughter Hajime White said, “He wouldn’t leave his son.” Their bodies were found in Altadena as they couldn’t escape the flames.
The fires have killed at least 10. Officials say the death toll may rise as identification goes on. The LA medical examiner uses dental records and DNA because of the state of the remains. Sheriff Robert Luna said emergency crews face challenges like spot fires and gas leaks.
Among the dead is 66 – year – old Victor Shaw. He died trying to save his 55 – year – old family home. His sister Shari said she begged him to evacuate. “I called his name, no reply, so I had to save myself.” 82 – year – old Rodney Nickerson also died. He stayed in his Altadena home, thinking the fire would pass.
The wildfires, the most destructive in LA’s history, have burned over 34,000 acres. Celebrities like Anthony Hopkins and Paris Hilton lost their homes. As searches continue, officials ask for patience. The sheriff warned, “It’ll take time to see the full damage.”
