The FDA alerted the public that Walmart is recalling chicken broth sold in nine states due to spoilage risks. Walmart has told customers to toss the product and get a refund.
The Food and Drug Administration updated its site about the recall of over 2,000 cases of chicken broth. The issue? A packaging flaw that could lead to spoilage.
The recalled product is “Great Value, Chicken Broth, 48 oz., Aseptic paper cartons, 6 retail units per case, 120 cases/pallet.” The recall is because of “Potential packaging failures that could ruin the product’s sterility, causing spoilage.”
The affected cartons have a “Best Used By” date of March 25, 2026, batch code 98F09234, and UPCs 007874206684 (retail) and 078742066844 (cases).
Tree House Foods Inc., the maker, voluntarily recalled the product on December 11, 2024. It distributed 2,023 cases to 242 Walmart stores across nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
Tree House Foods informed consignees of the recall by phone. The recall is still ongoing, and the company hasn’t issued a press release.
Walmart quickly removed the affected items after learning of the problem. In a statement to USA Today, Walmart said, “Customer health and safety are our top priority.” They added, “Once we knew, we removed all impacted products from affected stores. We’re still working with the supplier to look into it.”
Walmart told customers who bought the broth not to eat it and to throw it away right away. They can also ask for a full refund.
This isn’t the first Great Value product recall by the FDA. Last year, Great Value 100% Apple Juice, sold in 8 – ounce plastic bottles in six – packs, was recalled. The issue? It had inorganic arsenic above the industry – set limit (13.2ppb).
