“Apart from Baling Hospital, other injured victims were also taken to Gerik Hospital, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital and Taiping Hospital,” he added.
He said the police force could not release the official list of victims as the post-mortem examination was still underway. The police are conducting a detailed investigation into the accident, including technical factors, negligence and criminal records of those involved. The operation is being coordinated with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom), and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS).
“The road where the accident happened has many curves and is steep (hilly)… It was dark and there were no lights, except near the Tasik Banding Lake area, but it is still too early to draw any conclusions. The bus driver was also injured and we have not been able to record his statement yet,” he said.
According to Bernama news agency, Higher Education Minister Seri Zambry Abd Kadir stressed that the ministry would provide all necessary assistance to those involved in the accident. “Further details will be updated in due course,” he said in a Facebook post on the same day.
In a separate statement, Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) chief Sayani Saidon said the bus and the Perodua Alza MPV were travelling in the same direction from Jeli, Kelantan, to Gerik just before the accident.
She said the accident caused the bus to overturn and the MPV to slide into a ditch. “Some of the victims managed to escape from the bus, some were thrown out, while others remained trapped inside the bus,” she added.
She said: “The injured victims, including those who managed to escape from the bus, were given initial treatment by the Health Ministry personnel at the scene before being taken to hospital.”
