For many skin problems, doctors or dermatologists offer effective treatments. However, they can be costly and might damage the surrounding healthy skin, sometimes even leaving scars. Fortunately, natural skincare provides many options to try at home first. As always, watch your skin for unwanted side effects. If the problem persists, consult a doctor or dermatologist.
Throughout our lives, we’re exposed to various elements, with the sun being the most prominent. While sunshine is beneficial for our health, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can severely damage the skin. Often, this damage only shows up decades later as age spots. Age spots are simply areas of hyperpigmentation, or dark patches, caused by sun exposure and damage.
Age Spots
Prevention is key for age spots. From a young age, use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even in winter and on cloudy days. Also, wear sun – protective clothing like hats and sunglasses. If you already have age spots, try these natural remedies:
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Studies suggest acetic acid in it may lighten skin pigmentation. Mix it with equal parts water, apply to dark patches for 2 – 3 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water, and repeat twice a day.
- Aloe Vera: A 2012 study found aloin in aloe vera is a natural depigmentation compound. Apply it to affected areas before bed and rinse in the morning.
- Green Tea Extract: Research shows it can depigment the skin. Buy green tea extract and apply as directed. Using green tea bags may not work as there’s no evidence.
- Black Tea: A guinea – pig study found black tea lightened dark spots, but there are no human studies. If you want to try, soak black tea leaves in boiling distilled water for 2 hours, strain, and apply with a cotton ball once a day.
- Licorice Extract: It can lighten sun – induced hyperpigmentation due to its active ingredients. Look for licorice – containing creams and apply as directed.
- Orchid Extracts: Applying orchid extracts to dark spots for 8 weeks reduced their size and appearance. Find products like masks, creams, or scrubs with orchid extract.
- Lactic Acid Peels: Lactic acid in dairy products is an effective lightening agent, gentler on sensitive skin than glycolic peels. Apply sunscreen after. Not recommended for those with eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis.
There are other options like retinol – based or hyaluronic – acid – containing products. You can also see a dermatologist for procedures like microdermabrasion, cryotherapy, chemical peels, and laser treatment, which should be done by licensed professionals.
