I met Emily three years after my wife passed away. It was a rough time for both of us, but eventually, I introduced her to my daughter, Amy. To my relief, they seemed to get along well at first. I hoped they’d form a close, supportive bond.
When Emily and I got engaged, we began planning the wedding together. But when we discussed the flower girl, Emily suddenly suggested using her nephew instead of Amy. I was shocked. I calmly insisted Amy be included — she was my daughter and deserved that role.
On the wedding morning, I passed a room and overheard Emily’s bridesmaids whispering behind the door.“She said to ‘accidentally’ lock Amy in here before the ceremony.”“What? That’s her future stepdaughter.”“She can’t stand the girl — she looks too much like Jim’s late wife.”
