Mary’s pregnancy and delivery were normal. No sign of trouble for baby Michelle. But doctors knew something was wrong when she opened her eyes. They found it was Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, a rare genetic disease with only 250 known cases worldwide.
No one at Children’s Memorial Hospital, where Michelle was born, had seen it.
“My heart sank when the doctor said it was Hallermann-Streiff syndrome. I worried about caring for a child with a one-in-five-million disease,” Michelle’s mother said.
