A couple with Down syndrome had a son: he’s now 27, what do they look like today?

More than 20 years ago, Patti White of California received news that filled her with joy but also with concern. Her daughter, Lisa, announced that she was pregnant. Lisa has Down syndrome, a genetic condition caused by a chromosomal abnormality that can cause varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability. However, many people forget that people with Down syndrome can lead independent lives, work, and care for themselves.

The likelihood of two people with Down syndrome having children is low, as men with this condition rarely become fathers. So when Patti learned that her grandson had been born, she was very surprised, but she wholeheartedly supported Lisa in her decision to raise the baby. At 29, Lisa had her own apartment and worked full-time at a local Goodwill store. She had been living independently for 11 years.

“She got along with everyone. She could do everything except run the cash register. She loved being there, and her coworkers loved having her,” Patti said in a 2016 interview with  Voice  . Lisa also began a relationship with a man with Down syndrome. Although they dated, they each lived in their own homes. Patti understood that her daughter was in a mature and healthy relationship, so they discussed birth control and safe relationships.

Today, Nick is 24 years old and a handsome young man who was lovingly raised by his mother and grandmother, who are incredibly proud of him. Being a mother brings challenges for any woman, but Lisa also had to face the prejudices of those who disapproved of her decision. Some of her friends even stopped speaking to her because their parents feared that her example would influence their own daughters and motivate them to want to be mothers as well.

For years, this mother-son team has shown the world the courage and capabilities of people with Down syndrome. Patti, Lisa, and Nick’s story is not only inspiring but also provides important information for those facing similar decisions. They are true examples of strength and deserve our respect and admiration. If you agree, share their story!
