A two-year-old girl died this Thursday after being accidentally shot by her five-year-old cousin. The tragedy occurred in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, just nine months after the family officially adopted Eloá Victória Silva Oliveira. On August 11 of last year, the child’s mother, Raquel da Silva Oliveira, published a message celebrating the end of the process.
“It is with great joy that we share this great blessing with you. We have the birth certificate of Eloá Victória Silva Oliveira with Elienay and Raquel as her parents. Officially, she is a daughter on the document because in our hearts she has been a daughter for a long time. Thank you all for your prayers,” Raquel posted, with a photo of the family.
Eloá was in her father’s room, a military police officer, with her cousin when the two children managed to access the weapon that was hidden in a false bottom. The information is from Lieutenant Colonel Hadassah Susannah Beserra Souza. The Civil Police have already been to the scene of the tragedy and are investigating the circumstances.
— It’s a fatality. As mothers and police officers, we know the difficulties of having a firearm at home. They were playing in their father’s room, accessed a false-bottom compartment and had access to this firearm — said the lieutenant colonel, in an interview at the scene of the tragedy.
According to her, the father was at home taking care of the girl when the shooting happened.
— Apparently, the death was immediate. The shot hit the girl’s head. The cousin doesn’t even know what happened, she still doesn’t understand — he said.
