If you’re from a Western place, you likely snooze curled up on a cushy bed. But in a Japanese bedroom, you might not spot a bed at all. The Japanese have several good reasons for sleeping on the floor, and it’s not just about tradition or saving space in tiny apartments. Turns out, it has some great health perks.
We at Bright Side love Japan for many things. Given it’s now the world’s most long-lived nation, we wondered about the centuries-old floor-sleeping tradition.
Sleeping on a firm, flat surface is kind to your back and might ease years-old aches. A soft bed feels nice, but over time, your mattress can sag, curving your spine and causing back pain. Docs even suggest adding plywood under a too-soft mattress. Floor-sleeping keeps your spine straight and stops your body from contorting.
If you sleep right with proper spine support, you’ll find it easier to stand tall during the day. Switching to the floor can correct bad posture, since a pain-free back means no more slouching.
