Move a match to get the correct calculation

Now that we get the setup and common errors, let’s look at three possible solutions. Each needs just one matchstick move to make the equation correct.

The first solution is simple. Take one vertical matchstick from the plus sign and put it on top of the 6 to turn it into an 8. Now the equation is:

8 – 4 = 4

It works! 8 minus 4 is 4, and we solved it with one easy move.

The second solution is to turn the 6 into a 0. Just remove one horizontal matchstick from the top of the 6. The equation becomes:

0 + 4 = 4

Perfect! Zero plus 4 is 4, and it’s correct.

For the third solution, turn the 6 into a 5 by moving one upper matchstick to the lower part. The new equation is:

5 + 4 = 9

Another winner! 5 plus 4 is 9, and we fixed it with one move.
