At Least 13 Dead, 28 Injured After Bus of Tourists Plunges Down 160-Foot Gorge

At least 13 people lost their lives and nearly 30 got hurt on Friday, Jan. 3, when a bus plunged 160 feet down a gorge in Colombia.

Colombia’s Transport Minister, María Constanza García Alicastro, said the awful accident happened early that morning in Tangua municipality, on the road linking Pasto and Ipiales.

“So far, we know there are 13 dead, 28 injured, and 1 unharmed,” she posted on X (previously Twitter). “My deepest sympathies to the families. The national government stands with them in these tough times.”

Local media NTN24 reported 42 people were on the bus when it crashed on the Pasto-Rumichaca highway. Sources said it was on a stretch with “tricky curves” when things went wrong.
