The rift between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the British monarchy has long grabbed public attention. Over time, a string of events and revelations have widened the gap. But one thing really got under Harry’s skin. A royal expert says a major call by King Charles might’ve been the last straw for the Duke of Sussex, making him feel betrayed and shoved aside.
The Growing Split
Harry and Meghan’s step back from royal duties and move to the US was their bid for a more private life, a big break from royal norms. Since then, they’ve spilled their frustrations on different platforms, like their Oprah chat and Harry’s memoir, “Spare”. These public spats laid bare the tensions they faced as working royals.
The monarchy, for the most part, has stayed mum, sticking to the old “never complain, never explain” rule. But word is, trust between the Sussexes and top royals, especially King Charles and Prince William, has tanked. To the monarchy, Harry and Meghan’s actions seem like a double whammy: protocol breach and loyalty lapse.
The Frogmore Cottage Boot
The thing that seemingly pushed Harry over the edge was King Charles yanking Harry and Meghan’s access to Frogmore Cottage, their old UK home. Tucked away on the Windsor estate, it was a touchstone to the UK for them after they moved to California.
The eviction notice last year, three years after they stepped down, stung Harry bad. Royal expert Tom Quinn told The Daily Mirror: “Back then, few grasped how much of a slap in the face it was for Harry – it was the last straw.”
