My mother-in-law scolded me for not ironing bedding before putting in on the bed. I’ve never done that before. Is she actually right

For some, ironing bedding is a must; for others, it’s a waste of time. If a family member criticizes your bedding care, you might wonder: is ironing bedding really worth it? Let’s explore its origins, pros, cons, and its place in modern home care.

Ironing bedding has historical roots. In the past, it was important for hygiene (killing germs with heat before modern detergents) and appearance (a smooth bed showed good housekeeping). This tradition is still valued by some for the neat look, even though modern detergents make ironing for sanitation less necessary.

There are benefits to ironing sheets. It gives a wrinkle – free, hotel – like look, which can enhance the bedroom’s appearance and feel luxurious. Ironed sheets lie flat, improving comfort and sleep quality. The heat can also kill dust mites and bacteria, adding a health benefit. For some, the act of ironing is calming.

However, ironing bedding has downsides. It’s time – consuming, taking 20 – 30 minutes per sheet. Regular iron use increases energy consumption, which isn’t eco – friendly. Repeated ironing can damage fabric fibers, especially for delicate materials. Also, modern fabric technology offers wrinkle – resistant sheets that need little or no ironing.
