Powered by his lifelong legacy as an entertainer and animal activist, this icon is still going strong at 99

In 1972, America was buzzing with Don McLean’s hit American Pie, Richard Nixon’s Watergate scandal, and NASA’s new Space Shuttle program. That same year, Bob Barker stepped onto the stage of The Price is Right, launching himself and the game show into history.

For 35 years, Barker was a household name, hosting TV’s longest-running game show, winning 14 Daytime Emmy Awards, and using his platform to champion animal welfare. His iconic catchphrase, “Help control the pet population—have your pets spayed or neutered,” became as memorable as the show itself.

Born on a South Dakota Indian reservation and a member of the Sioux Tribe, Barker’s journey was remarkable. After serving as a Navy Reserve pilot in WWII, he pursued a career in broadcasting. He found success hosting Truth or Consequences before becoming the face of The Price is Right.

Off-screen, Barker’s passion for animal rights, inspired by his late wife Dorothy Jo Gideon, led to millions in donations and education campaigns. A long-time vegetarian, Barker credited his health to a simple lifestyle, supplements, and his partner of 40 years, Nancy Burnet.

Now 99, Barker reflects on a “charmed life” filled with groundbreaking achievements and love for animals. we honor his unwavering dedication to making the world a better place.
