Nail Health Indicators
Nails show internal health. Peeling nails and cuticles can be from iron deficiency or dehydration. Untreated iron deficiency can cause anemia, chest pain, dizziness. White spots on nails may be due to:
- Allergies or fungal infections
- Mineral deficiencies (low zinc or calcium)
- Minor nail bed injuries
To improve nail health: - Eat iron-rich foods like lean meats, beans, tofu.
- Stay hydrated to prevent brittle nails.
- Use nourishing oils and creams for cuticles.
If nail problems continue after lifestyle changes, consult a healthcare provider.
Cracked Heels and Health
Cracked heels may seem minor but can mean health issues like eczema, hypothyroidism, or diabetes. If you have persistent dryness, peeling, or deep cracks:
- Soak feet in warm water and exfoliate with a pumice stone.
- Use moisturizer with lactic acid, shea butter, or jojoba oil.
- Wear comfortable shoes to avoid heel pressure.
If home treatments don’t work, see a doctor for thyroid or circulation problems.
Facial Redness and Rosacea
Persistent facial redness may be more than sensitive skin. Rosacea is common, affecting over 14 million in the U.S., often after 30. Symptoms:
- Flushed skin getting worse
- Visible blood vessels and small bumps
- Eye irritation and swelling
To manage rosacea: - Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare.
- Protect skin with SPF 30+ sunscreen daily.
- Avoid triggers like spicy foods, alcohol, extreme temps.
If redness stays, a dermatologist can prescribe creams or laser treatments.
Swollen Eyes and Causes
If no allergies or infections but swollen eyes, likely due to too much salt. High sodium causes fluid retention, puffiness around eyes and face. Other causes:
- Grave’s disease (thyroid eye swelling)
- Blocked tear ducts
- Smoking or chronic dehydration
- Lack of sleep
To reduce puffiness: - Cut salty foods, increase potassium (bananas, spinach, avocados).
- Use cold compresses or tea bags.
- Get 7-8 hours of sleep.
If swelling continues after lifestyle changes, see a doctor for thyroid or kidney issues.
