A woman lost her job after writing “I hope Trump Deports you” on a receipt at a Mexican restaurant.
During the early weeks of US President Donald Trump’s term, he ordered mass deportations of undocumented migrants. It appears some people are using this as an excuse to harass others at work.
On March 2, real estate agent Stephanie Lovins had a meal at Cazuelas Mexican Cantina in Columbus, Ohio. When the bill came, instead of leaving a tip, Lovins wrote a mean message on the receipt for the waiter, who is a US citizen. Reportedly, she got angry about the restaurant’s “one coupon per table” rule.
She wrote, “I hope Trump deports you!!!” and in the tip section, she added, “Zero, you suck.”
Lovins tried to hide her identity by scribbling out her name on the receipt. But it was still visible on the merchant’s copy. A restaurant employee posted it on Facebook with the caption, “Y’all hate us but love our food. Shame on you, Stephanie, for not being upfront.”
When the post went viral, Lovins tried to deny it. She claimed on LinkedIn and Facebook that her card had been stolen.
On Facebook, she said, “My credit card was lost/stolen, and someone tried to use it. Thanks for telling me! I’ve reported this to my bank.”
On LinkedIn, she said, “Thanks for all the recent alerts about scammers and profile hackers! I just found out my credit card is missing and someone tried to use it. Thanks for your patience while I deal with this.”
However, the restaurant checked its CCTV footage and proved her claims false. They confirmed it was her dining there.
After the incident, Lovins’ employer, Century 21, said she was fired, stating “hate has no place in our brand”.
In a statement, the company said, “We know about the issue with this agent. Hate has no place in the CENTURY 21 brand, and we’re taking this very seriously.
After looking into it and talking to the relevant broker (since all CENTURY 21 – affiliated companies are independently owned and run), we can confirm this agent is no longer part of our brand.”
