In the early 1970s, Friedman formed the spoof country band Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys. He penned songs like “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore” and “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed.”
The band’s stint was brief. In 1974, Kinky released a self-titled album and then toured with Bob Dylan for two years.
The Texas Monthly called Richard “Kinky” Friedman “a Texas icon, pouring his heart into songs, fiction, and speeches.”
