Thomas Beatie: The World’s First Pregnant Man
Sixteen years ago, Thomas Beatie made headlines as the first legally recognized man to become pregnant and give birth.
Born female in 1974 as Tracy LaGondino in Hawaii, Thomas began identifying as male at age 10 and started hormone therapy at 23.
By 2002, he had undergone chest surgery and legally changed his gender, but chose to keep his reproductive organs.
In 2006, facing fertility issues with his then-wife Nancy, Thomas paused testosterone treatment and decided to carry the child himself.
The image of a pregnant Thomas shocked the world in 2008. Despite harsh criticism and even death threats, Thomas stood firm.
“Doctors have discriminated against us… Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive,” he said.
Becoming a Father
After 48 hours of labor, Thomas gave birth to a healthy daughter, Susan. He later welcomed two sons, Austin and Jensen. His family lived quietly, embracing a traditional lifestyle.
In his 2008 Oprah interview, Thomas said, “It’s not a male or female desire to want to have a child; it’s a human desire.”
Life After Fame
Thomas later divorced Nancy and married Amber in 2016. Now living in Oregon, the couple raises a blended family.
“It can get pretty loud with four kids aged 3, 5, 6, and 7, but we love it,” he told the Daily Mail. He currently works as a stockbroker in Phoenix and occasionally speaks publicly.
