Four members of a family

A devastating fire that occurred Tuesday morning claimed the lives of four family members, including three minors, in the town of San Juan de Dios de Desamparados, Costa Rica.

The victims were identified as Marilyn Chacón and her children Kendall, Keylor, and Kristell Naomy Guillén Chacón, who was about to turn 4 on August 2, according to official data from the Civil Registry.

The fire started in a dormitory-style structure where the family lived. Initial investigations indicate that the flames started in a general store located within the building, quickly spreading to the various rooms.

The intensity of the fire made any escape attempt by the occupants difficult. Despite the prompt arrival of the Fire Department, the victims were no longer showing any vital signs by the time of rescue.

Among the deceased is Kristell Naomy, a three-year-old girl who was eagerly awaiting her next birthday celebration.

Eladio Rojas, a relative and neighbor of the deceased, told local media outlet CR Hoy that the girl was filled with enthusiasm for her birthday. “ She was very excited because they were going to celebrate her. You propose and God decides. What happened is very sad, ” he expressed his dismay.

Also lost along with her were her brothers Kendall and Keylor, ages 9 and 12 respectively, and her mother Marilyn Chacón, who had been married for seven years to Andrés Guillén, an active Public Force officer assigned to the Río Azul delegation in La Unión de Cartago.

The fire was reported on the morning of Tuesday, July 30, 2025, according to preliminary reports from the emergency department.

This tragic event has shocked local residents, who deeply mourn the loss of a beloved family.

Authorities continue their investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Meanwhile, the community is united in grief and expressing its solidarity with the father, who survived this tragedy.
