Girl catches jigger, the worst happens and the case shocks the doctors who treated her

The 10-year-old girl made headlines in the scientific journal The New England Journal of Medicine.

The case that left doctors shocked happened after a little girl, just 10 years old, was struck by a serious case of jiggers, which became so complicated that it scared everyone who had contact with her during the period in which everything happened.

According to reports, the girl is English, but was spending a few days in Brazil when she contracted jiggery-zoster. Her parents only discovered the case when she returned home. However, it is not known why, but they only took her to the doctor to evaluate the case 10 days later.

When they sought medical help, the case was already serious, complicated, and so frightening that it became a news item in the scientific journal The New England Journal of Medicine.

According to the doctors who treated her, the bugs on the 10-year-old girl’s feet were successfully removed through a surgical procedure. After removal, the area was treated with topical antibiotics.

What is ‘Bicho de pé’?

The jigger is characterized by an infectious episode caused by the female parasite Tunga penetrans, which enters the person’s skin through contact of the feet with contaminated soil, hence the importance of not walking barefoot in suspicious areas.

Itching is the main symptom, shortly after contamination, the area begins to show one or more dark brown dots in the affected region.
