Texas Flood Disaster: Over 100 Dead and Search Continues
Central Texas is reeling after flash floods caused by heavy storms pushed the Guadalupe River to rise over 26 feet in just 45 minutes on July 4. Authorities now confirm at least 104 deaths, with rescue teams still searching for missing people.
Camp Mystic Devastated
Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ summer camp beside the river, was among the hardest hit. Twenty-seven campers and counselors have died, while 11 more remain missing.
Thirteen-year-old camper Stella Thompson described the scene: “It didn’t look like Camp Mystic anymore,” with kayaks stuck in trees and debris everywhere. She recalled power outages and rescue helicopters overhead as those in lower cabins were evacuated.
A Final Message and County Losses
Among the victims was 21-year-old Joyce Catherine Badon, who sent a heartbreaking last text to her parents: “We’re being washed away.” Her body was found Monday after her house collapsed in the flood. Joyce’s mother wrote on Facebook, “We found our lovely daughter who blessed us for 21 years! We pray to be able to find her three friends soon. God is good!”
Kerr County, where Camp Mystic is located, suffered the most with 84 deaths. Other counties affected include Travis (7), Kendall (6), Burnet (4), Williamson (2), and Tom Green (1).
