How To Restore Headlights on Your Car

Over time, plastic lenses can get dull, damaged, and turn yellow. Polishing can remove the haze. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars to fix your car’s headlights, you can restore them in 45 minutes for about $15.

Tools Needed

  • Flannel polishing cloth
  • Latex gloves
  • Masking tape
  • Wet & dry sandpaper (1000 – 2500 grit)

Materials Needed

  • Plastic polish

Project Steps

  1. Wash and Sand Horizontally
    • Clean the hazy headlight with warm soapy water.
    • Rinse with clear water and let it dry.
    • Mask the area around the lens to prevent paint scratches.
    • Soak the sandpaper in water, then start with the grit that fits your needs. Sand in one direction.
  2. Rinse and Sand Vertically
    • Rinse and change the sanding direction with the next grit. Keep going until you use the 2,500 – grit paper.
  3. Buff the lens with Polish
    • Wash the headlamp with clear, cool water and dry it.
    • Wet a corner of the flannel cloth with polishing compound.
    • Apply firm pressure and polish the headlamp in circles until it’s smooth and clean.
  4. Polish the headlight lens
    • Let the polish dry completely, then buff off the remaining polish with the clean part of the cloth.
    • Repeat the polishing.
    • If there are still cloudy spots due to headlamp damage, repolish those areas with a polishing product.
    • Buff and check again. The lens should be crystal – clear!
