I’m getting married to live the American dream but I don’t expect it to be

In the vibrant city of San Francisco, 68 – year – old Robert had led a life full of stories. A retired schoolteacher, he’d seen generations of students come and go, but his own personal life had been rather lonely since his divorce years ago.

Enter 25 – year – old Luis, who had emigrated from a small town in Central America with stars in his eyes, dreaming of the American way of life. But as he soon discovered, the path to legal residency was fraught with difficulties. Faced with the threat of deportation, Luis was desperate.

That’s when he met Robert at a community center. They struck up a conversation, and over time, a strange idea took root in Luis’s mind. He proposed to Robert – not out of love, but as a means to secure his status in the United States. To his surprise, Robert, longing for companionship, agreed.

After their marriage, the initial period was awkward. Luis felt guilty for using Robert, but the fear of going back to his struggling homeland kept him from confessing his true motives. Robert, on the other hand, was blissfully unaware, thinking he’d finally found a new lease on life with a younger partner.

However, as months passed, cracks began to form. Luis started to feel suffocated by the charade. He missed the freedom of his youth and the chance to build a life based on genuine love and choice. Meanwhile, Robert noticed Luis’s growing distance and became suspicious.

One day, in a heated argument, Luis finally blurted out the truth. Robert was devastated. “I thought we had something real,” he said, his voice trembling with pain. “You were just using me for your own gain.”

Luis, filled with remorse, tried to explain his desperation, but the damage was done. In the midst of their turmoil, the immigration authorities caught wind of their suspicious marriage. An investigation loomed over them, threatening to tear apart what little was left of their tenuous bond. Now, both men were left to face the consequences of their hasty decision, with the American dream they each envisioned in shambles.
